Beginner's guide to personal training – what to expect at the first session
Going to a personal trainer for the first time? Find out what happens at the first session, how to prepare and what questions to ask.
The first session with a personal trainer can feel daunting. Here is exactly what to expect – so you can walk in prepared and confident.
Before the first session
Fill in a health questionnaire. Most trainers will ask about past injuries, current health conditions, medications, and physical activity history before you train together. Be honest – this information shapes your programme.
Set a clear goal. Vague goals (“get fit”, “lose weight”) make it harder for the trainer to help you. Think about: what specifically do you want to achieve, by when, and what has stopped you before?
Wear comfortable training kit. Bring a water bottle. No specialist equipment needed for the first session.
What happens at the first session
- Health and goal interview (15–20 min) – the trainer reviews your questionnaire, asks follow-up questions and maps out a direction.
- Movement screening (10–15 min) – basic mobility and stability tests to identify limitations and imbalances.
- Introduction to key movements (20–30 min) – the trainer demonstrates and coaches you through fundamental exercises at a light load. The goal is assessment and technique, not intensity.
- Programme overview – the trainer explains the proposed approach, frequency and what to expect over the first 4–6 weeks.
Questions to ask at the first session
- What does success look like after 8 weeks, based on what you have seen today?
- How will we track progress?
- What should I do on the days I do not train with you?
- What should I avoid until we have worked on my technique?
What happens after 4–6 weeks
By this point most people notice: improved technique, better energy levels, some visible body composition changes, and – importantly – a sense of what they are capable of. The trainer adjusts the programme based on how you have responded.
